Removing the Intimidation from Bujo Part 1


As I mentioned in my first post, I was really intimidated by the idea of bullet journaling. If fear is what is holding you back, then let’s talk about it. Let’s talk about some of the excuses that are popping into your head.

I Don’t Even Know Where to Start

Start with buying a journal; any journal. I found my dotted journal helped me a lot with space alignment and the freedom to write where I wanted. You can go with a blank, graph, or a lined journal. It really depends on your needs and wants. I bought my first bullet journal from the Bullet Journal website, a journal made by  Leuchtturm1917.

If you are not ready to commit to even a $25.00 journal or you just don’t have the money, then get whatever fits your budget. No matter which journal you choose, there are a ton of tutorials that can help you with setting up your journal. I was drawn to the Leuchtturm1917 journals because they make setting up your bujo so much easier with numbered pages and ink-proof paper. Stop thinking about how you first need to get all of the beautiful TomBow Dual Brush or Stabilo pens, and focus on just getting your journal.

I Don’t Know What Layout I Should Use For My Monthly or Weekly Spreads.

There is no right way to set up a spread. I am still figuring out what works for me. I see all of those seasoned bullet journalists, and my internal voice starts telling me that my cursive looks like a second grader’s first week trying. This is where practice comes into play. Don’t be hard on yourself. I know, easier said than done, but in the end the spread is meant to help you and no one else.

My weekly spread has changed from having the days of the week with a couple of habit tracker boxes to check off to a more flexible format as seen below. I found that habit trackers worked better only on my monthly spread. When I placed my habit trackers on my weekly spread, I never used them.

I realized that I never used my habit trackers during the week, because I took time to reflect. Once a week (or depending how I’m feeling it can be once a month) I reflect on  my needs and wants. I suggest dedicating a half a page to a page and list what worked and why.

Go on Instagram and Pinterest to gain some inspiration, and look to see how others are using their bujo. Go as complex or simple as you need it to be. You don’t have to have a reflection page, but I find that it helps me when setting up my next week. Let me know if you use a reflection page. I Don’t Have Time to Set Up My Bullet Journal

Are you one of those people who likes to just binge Netflix, Hulu, or whatever you like to watch? Then you totally have time to set up your bujo. In the time it takes to watch (And let’s be honest.. it is background noise after awhile) an hour episode of Law & Order SVU, you could have your weekly log completed; doodles and all like my more complex spreads. Sometimes I’ll even throw on an old movie that I’ve seen a billion times just so that I can zone out while setting up.

Consider this like your time for meditation. You are reflecting, looking forward, and focusing on your bujo practice. It is your you time and your dedication. At first, it may seem tasking to do as you are getting used to setting it all up. Give it a couple of weeks, and you will get excited to spend time setting it up. If you can’t dedicate an 30 minutes to an hour, then break it up during the end of the week. You could even try setting up your day for five minutes the day of; just make sure you have your overall highlights of the week noted so you don’t miss anything. Setting up your bujo should not feel like a stress or burden to you.

There have been times that I didn’t feel like setting up my journal on a Sunday night; my dedicated journal night. I may feel exhausted, or I had a really busy day. Sometimes I have actually set up my journal for the week on a Tuesday or a Wednesday while that current spread should be in use (sort of like this post that was meant for Sunday….). The important thing is to be kind to yourself. Do it just to finish it. The feeling of knowing you set it up in general will make you feel accomplished and organized. There have been weeks where I didn’t use my bujo; it’s ok. The key to a bujo is that it is supposed to help us and fit our lifestyle.
